Kaatru is a 5 ½ acre coconut farm just behind the village of Thekkalur. Situated on a hill slope the farm is a windy place. Irrespective of the time of the year, you will hear the wind, the swaying of coconut trees and the rustle of the leaves.

"This is a rustic farm where you will experience village life in the cradle of nature. We sincerely hope you enjoy your stay"

Getting to Thekkalur Village

Thekkalur is a village in the foothills of the Nilgiri mountains, just two kilometres from the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border. It lies just off the SH164, which leads to Silent Valley and the town of Mannarkad before it reaches the Palghat plains. The other villages near Thekkalur are Anaikatti, Vadakalur, Arnatkadu and Thuvaipathy.

Reaching Kaattru

When coming from Coimbatore, you pass through Thadagam and reach the Mangarai forest checkpost from where the ghat road begins. On either side of the road are hills, forests and stunning monolithic rock peaks. Once you pass Arsha Vidya Gurukulam and arrive at the Aalamaramedu bus stop, the next one kilometer the road climbs up and down till you reach Jambukandi junction.

Go on for another 3-4 kilometres, you will see a board proclaiming K.K. Nagar. A few hundred yards ahead is a narrow and picturesque road on the left. A small bridge takes you over a seasonal stream and coconut and betel farms and natural forests surround you. The road climbs gently till the village of Thekkalur appears on the left.

Surroundings at Kaattru

This is a quiet settlement consisting of a narrow cemented road with houses on either side. The residents are primarily from the Irula community and speak their Irula language and Tamil. Extremely friendly and helpful, the people of Thekkalur always welcome you with a smile. The village is beautifully kept and each house has a small sit-out with flowering plants and trees at the entrance. Follow the road until it turns right at the end of the village. This will lead you to Kaatru.

If you are lucky, you may meet some special visitors who occasionally wander into the village. As the name Anaikatti suggests, this is the land of elephants and they do call on us!
